Can You Identify Limiting And Excess Reagents?
How do you balance and solve these problems?

LIMITING REACTANT or REAGENT
Reactant which gives the least amount of the product according to the balance chemical equation is called the limiting reactant or reagent. Limiting reactant control the reaction because when limiting reactant end, reaction stops.
EXCESS REACTANT or REAGENT
Reactant which gives the excess amount of the product according to the balance chemical equation is called the excess reactant or reagent. It is not completely consumed in the reaction because when limiting reactant is end then the excess amount of the reactant or reagent is left and that's why it is called excess reagent or reactant.
Example
CH4 + 2 O2 ………….. CO2 + 2 H2O
1 mole 2 mole 1 mole 2 mole
1 (12+1*4) 2 (16*2) 1(12+16*2) 2 (1*2+16)
16 kg 64 kg 44 kg 36 kg
2 Reactant or reagent CH4 and O2
CH4 (If CO2 is our desired product)
1 mole CH4 produces = 1 mole of CO2
Or
16 kg CH4 produce = 44 kg of CO2
1 kg CH4 produce = 44 /16 = 2.75 kg of CO2
O2 (If CO2 is our desired product)
2 mole O2 produces = 1 mole of CO2
1 mole O2 produces = 1/2 = 0.5 mole of CO2
Or
32 kg O2 produce = 44 kg of CO2
1 kg CH4 produce = 44 /32 = 1.375 kg of CO2
Because 1 mole O2 or1 kg O2 gives the least amount of the product CO2 as compared to CH4, So O2 is the limiting reactant and CH4 is the excess reactant
