Can You Call Yourself A Paralegal If You Do Not Work Under A Lawyer?

My ex-husband's new wife sent me a nasty letter today and signed her name w/ paralegal next to it. She is a waitress and has been for many years. We just recently became entangled in custody litigations. Can she do that? Is she breaking any laws or just being an idiot trying to intimidate me?

You do not have to work for a lawyer to be a paralegal. Paralegals are used by the court systems, corporations, and lots of other places. Real Estate companies hire them. Their particular education would be an asset to a lot of businesses and organizations.

What about the title "paralegal"....can just anyone use it? She has nothing to do with the court system. Don't you have to be licensed or something?

"A paralegal is an administrative person who works under the direct supervision of a lawyer"

That is what I found on the Wikipedia site and why I asked the question that I asked. I just want to know if she can send me letters calling herself a paralegal?

You are a paralegal as long as you are certified or have diploma/certificate

So.....can she threaten me with letters misrepresenting herself as a paralegal is all I want to know.....she is NOT licensed or affiliated with any court system or lawyer. Is this legal? Is there any place inside the law field that I can contact to have these letters stopped?
