The National Geographic Society was set up on January 27, 1888 in Washington, D.C. in the United States by a group of scientists and explorers; the first President of the organization was Gardiner Green Hubbard a noted American philanthropist who was also one of the founders of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T).

The National Geographic Society was created as an organization for the dissipation of knowledge existing as a non profit association. The fields with which the society concerns itself are geography and the natural sciences with an emphasis on conservation of the environment along with a study of human culture on the whole.

An important feature of the society was the National Geographic Magazine which provided a platform for putting forth findings related to scientific discoveries and inventions, geography and the natural world, world history and archeological discoveries, current events and new theories in various fields across the world; the magazine is considered to be one of the first to use photographs with the articles.
