    Desert cactus - indeed, all desert dwellers, plant and animal - need to store water because there is so little water available in the desert.

      Because for thousands of years, they have lived in their environment, and in that time of learning that this area doesn't get much rain, so they have learned how to store it. Pretty cool huh?
