Besides Depression, How Common Are Other Forms Of Mental Illness?

Answer Question

The general figure, excluding depression, and keeping in mind that many people suffer more than one form of mental illness, is about 9%.

Disabling anxiety disorders are probably the most common mental illnesses after depression.  They affect 6-10% of people at some time in their lives.    About 13% of the population may suffer some form of social phobia in their lives, including agoraphobia.  Stress is often a trigger, 35% of students in one study reported having had a panic attack in the previous year.

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is classified as a personality disorder, and affects  about 5% of women, about 3% of men.

Mood disorders, including bipolarity (used to be called manic depression) are thought to affect about 5% of the population, with the risk of developing them in childhood being about 1%.

Schizophrenia is much less common.  About 340 in 100,000 adults per year suffer from the condition.  The gernal life time risk in the UK of developing schizophrenic disorder might be 1 in 300.  The risk is higher for non-whites and people from socially deprived backgrounds (not clear why).

I am impressed by the statsics mentioned above, but you can obtain, completly updated information from NAMI.  Its the society devoted to helping, any they can, the mentally ill and families of the mentaly ill.  I would think that a larger number of people are suffering in silence, without formal diagnoises, because mental illness still carries a hush-hush mentallity, by many.

I believe the reason for so much illicate drug use is due in large part, by mentally ill persons trying to self medicate.  Actually I am sure of it.

The numbers fluctuate by our definitions of what mental illness actually are.  Do you know that until the early 80s homosexuality was considered part of mental illness, doctors went as far as elecro-shock therapy, to "treat" their "afflictions"

Very little is known about the mind and how it functions, much less disfuctions.

As the conditions, socially and physically worsen in our world, people not only aquire illnesses of the mind, they learn how to be ill, from a sick society. Hope this helps, if you would like a broader explanation of my viewpoints just let me know.  Good fortune.
