When Was The First World Snooker Championship Held?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The first snooker World Championship was held in 1927and won by the legendary Joe Davis who also organized the competition. The modest prize money was equivalent to £260 at today's values. Even more modest was the top break of the competition. This break of just 60 points was achieved by Albert Cope. Davis won with a score of 20-11 over Tom Dennis who was subsequently beaten by Davis every time he reached the final. The most ridiculous of these contests might have been in 1931 when it was held in a Nottingham pub and Davis and Dennis were the only entrants. Snooker has since moved on. The World Championships became a ranking tournament in 1974. At that time the dominant world class player was Welshman Ray Reardon. Reardon won the title in 1970, from 1974 to 1976 and again in 1978. Nowadays the championship matches are held in the Crucible Theatre Sheffield.
