Is The Television Series ,"The Simpsons" Meant For Children, Or Adults?

Answer Question

Matt Groening's hugely successful US animated sitcom, "The Simpsons," first aired in 1989, was one of the first attempts to create an animated comedy for adults. Although "The Simpsons" has been popular among teenagers for nearly two decades, this program is really aimed at an adult audience, with a firm knowledge of society's social and cultural problems.

"The Simpsons" is essentially a satirical show and it parodies stereotypical American suburbia and a dysfunctional family. The show has poked fun at political leaders, the media, political campaigns, religious authorities and mainstream society more generally. At first, some conservatives were upset with the show as they felt that it had a left-wing, liberal bias. Nevertheless, even many of these viewers realized that Groening's sitcom was irreverent all around and that it created parodies around all people and all situations.

Although "The Simpsons" can still be funny for children who do not necessarily appreciate the satirical humour and the social contexts being parodied, an understanding of this lifts the humour to an all new level.
