Older dogs can generally be fed on adult dog food, but definitely not puppy food, since this can be over rich in proteins. However, older dogs can be a little prone to becoming overweight, so reducing the amount fed (only by a slight amount) could be useful to ensure that the dog does not put on too much weight.

Older dogs may also experience some mobility problems i.e. stiffness in joints etc. It is estimated that 20% of dogs over the age of 1 year could actually benefit from a supplement (available from vets) to ensure mobility is maintained.

There are specific 'older dog' prescription diets which are available if your vet recommends that they are appropriate. These may contain fewer calories and an extract of green lipped mussels etc to ensure that as the dog ages a completely balanced diet can be achieved. However, these are usually substantially more expensive than other dried foods.
