Osteoporosis is a disease in which the bones become very porous, brittle and fragile. They break more easily and this can lead to disability, particularly in women who have passed through the menopause.
Avoiding osteoporosis is something that should be a lifelong goal, not just a last minute measure when the symptoms are already starting to appear. The body's bones are living tissues that continue to grow and change throughout life and the lifestyle can affect their health.
Bones are at the maximum mass at the age of about 30 ~ the stronger and better the bones are at that age, the smaller the risk of osteoporosis. To achieve maximum bone mass, children and young adults should eat a well balanced, healthy diet, rich in calcium providing foods such as low fat dairy products and they should participate in regular exercise to give the bones as much weight bearing exercise as possible to maximise bone strength and density.
After the age of 30, bone starts to be lost but this is gradual and keeping up the same health lifestyle can minimise the effects of ageing. For anyone at any age, improving diet and exercise, in consultation with a doctor, is likely to help general health and help to cut the risk of osteoporosis.
