When it comes to children's pets, there are a number of common animals that people choose. Small rodents are popular ~ Hamsters in particular. However some hamsters can be grumpy so a gerbil or a rat may be the best option. You should always do your research on whichever animal you choose to buy, in order to know what you are letting yourself in for. Rats for example rarely bite, yet they need quite a large cage and at least one hour out of their cage per day. Has your child got time to do this? Have you got space for a large cage in your house? If the answer is no then you really need to consider your options.

Goldfish also make good observation pets but are not ideal for children to clean out. They can assist in feeding but they should never be the sole owners as most fish need careful, specialist care.

Birds can also make good children's pets especially cockatiels and budgies. However, as with all pets, children should be supervised at all times and they should only assist in cleaning out and feeding the animals.

Overall a small rodent would be a good choice but remember, it will not only be the child looking after the animal - you will be involved too.

I suggest not getting a bird as a pet. I had birds when i was young and someone informed us that the birds that we had could spread some diseases. Personally, if you want a pet for your child, it depends on the age of the child and how much you will contribute. dogs can be good for children, but small dogs are for calmer children who are generally above the age of 8. However, they require little walking. Larger dogs are better for rough children, but need lots of exercise. You will also need to train them, as your child may be too young

A mini lop rabbit is a good choice. They are really friendly - they can live indoors or out. They don't like to be picked up much but they are good to stroke or play ball with. Not as hard to look after, as say a dog or cat, and can live longer than other small animals. I'd however not agree with hamsters and gerbils because they are too skitty. Male rats are lovely and affectionate but you have to be gentle and they need a very big cage.

My mini lop is really friendly (males generally are) and he runs to me when I call him and he loves to sit on my lap and have a stroke. He loves my children too. I've had rats, budgies and guinea pigs and the rabbit has been the best in my opinion. You'll be the one who looks after the pet as the novelty will wear off with children. So you will need to get a pet that you all will like - good luck!!
