Being your auto is a "96, it probably has over a hundred thousand miles on it. If so, and you don't have maintenance records to show how often the fluid was changed, then it is not a good idea to The change fluid. It could cause problems that you don't have.
Most Saturn transmissions that I have seen have an external filter, just like an engine oil filter. Changing it would not cause harm and would probably be a good idea.
You can check the tranny fluid level after you change the filter, with the engine running and in park. If it is low, just add fluid through the dipstick tube to the proper level according to the marks on the dipstick.
