How Do You Ask People To Dress Nice But Not Formal To A Dinner Party?

Answer Question

4 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

You write on the invitation, "Business casual" or "semi-formal" attire requested.
(Business casual is open collared shirt with jacket for men, and a pants' suit or casual dress for ladies.  Semi-formal is a step up from that.  The dresses are a little fancier, and the men wear a tie with the jacket.  )

For holiday events I usually say 'festive attire encouraged' - for a regular dinner party I agree that semi-formal is appropriate verbiage but if you want to play around with terms a little you could say something like - 'elegant attire' or 'party chic' or 'dinner chic' instead.
