Not sure how old your daughter is, but I'm going to use childen's authors as examples.  Patricia Polocco is a writer I feel raport with because she writes mostly about personal, childhood experiences that either remind me of an experience or of a feeling I had as a child.  My mind is drawing a blank on writers I felt no rapport with...probably because I didn't connect.  In order for an author to build a rapport with the reader, she must first know and understand her audience.  Write about things that you know will interest your audience.  You also must know the subject you're writing about.  If it's a personal piece, reveal your personality.  The audience must know who you are if you're going to connect.
