Realistically, using a toilet paper which contains a pattern does little more damage to the environment than plain toilet paper. The dyes which are used are very expensive and toilet paper contains only traces, often in parts per million ! After the paper has reached the sewage works, the dyes are soon eaten by bacteria and so have litte effect on the environment.
Kitchen rolls are slightly different in the sense that they are very much tougher when wet and it breaks down more slowly. However, bacteria still live on the kitchen paper, so it does not have an earth shattering effect on the environment.
Both these types of paper are produced using pretty strong bleaches and these do have an impact. Some environmentally toilet paper and kitchen roll can be ourchased, but it is generally more expensive and harder to source, although fans say it is worth the extra effort to help the sustainability of the planet.
