What Is The Best Sort Of Stone To Use For A Patio?

Answer Question

In Britain there are four main types of rock whch occur naturally: sandstone, limestone, granite and slate.  If you live in an area where one of these is found naturally then it would probably be best to use that type of stone.  These can be purchased quite cheaply if you have a quarry nearby.  This can save you over 60% in some cases, rather than if you go to a garden centre or stone merchant.

Sandstone is usually quite adaptable and unlike limestone, it is resistant to frost damage and it is very long wearing.  A surface such as Yorkstone is very popular for paving and Riven Yorkstone which has a slightly uneven surface, is actually a very good choice, since the surface is quite safe in frost.

Slate is a very eye catching surface and is actually available in a range of colours, but can be quite expensive.  Limescale should probably be avoided unless you live in the very south of the country.
