The Bahamas is such a small island and the transport available so good that there is no need to hire a car. The most popular transport type is a jitney, or local bus. The bus routes are clearly marked and each bus ride costs $1. You get on and sit down, paying as you leave by putting the money in the driver's hand. The amount is never checked as it acts on an honour system but likewise no change is given so make sure you give the correct amount.
Taxis can be used and are punctual and reasonably priced, and is a quicker option than the jitney. Boats are used to visit surrounding islands, and are situated at the back of the local artisans market. There are many vying for your custom, so check whether the price is return or one way. There will be guides telling you about the houses and buildings that you pass, but the talk is the same each time and so it is polite to pay a contribution for the first one you hear, but don't feel pressured into paying on the return journey.
If you would like just a tour of the local sites and historical information, then take a surrey ride. This is a horse and carriage ride with a guide who is very informative and friendly and a lovely way to get your bearings.

I would recommend renting a car so that you can tour the island for yourself it would work out much cheaper than using a taxi everyday. The left handside of the road is used so that is the first peculiarity that you would have to get use to but after a few hours you will get the hang of it. Nassau, the capital city is only 21 square miles by 7 square miles so it is quite easy to navigate around the island without getting lost, but it would be useful to travel with a map to keep your bearings!
