Is Los Angeles As Weird As They Say It Is?

Answer Question

Los Angeles - a city of superlatives and adjectives - is home to over 10 million people.

Second largest in America, the Californian city's nicknames perhaps hint at LA's true nature; Tinseltown, Lala Land and Lotusville. And not without good reason. For Los Angeles is, in all probability, the capital of alternative, a shrine for navel gazers, idealists, and beautiful people in equal measure.

The huge conurbation that is today's LA started out as a largely insignificant Mexican settlement. It was named El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciúncula (The Town of Our Lady the Queen of Angels of the Little Portion) or Los Angeles for short. Since its founding over 200 years ago, Los Angeles has regularly reinvented itself. From one horse cowboy-ville, to Gold Rush magnet, to oil town and now entertainment powerhouse thanks to Hollywood and its film studios. Being a focal point for the movie industry has, in large part, been responsible for the kookiness that's normally associated with LA.
