Monkey World was established in 1987 and it occupies an area of sixty five acres. Monkey World is a sanctuary cum zoo for the rehabilitation of abused primates the world over. It was started by Jim and Alison Cronin and focused mainly on chimpanzees that were being abused and mistreated by Spanish hawkers along Spain's beach fronts. The hawkers used to dress the monkeys in fancy apparel and cater to tourists wanting to be photographed with them. The animals were usually disposed of by the age of five.
Today Monkey World has approximately fifteen species of primates and it provides shelter to over a hundred and fifty animals.
