The answer to this depends on your belief, or lack of, in the hereafter. If you believe that the soul continues after death, then it makes perfect sense to expect communication from your dead loved ones or even spirits who are in your vicinity but didn't know you in life. On the day a loved one dies or `crosses over,' the energy is most powerful so hearing the loud noises on the day of your mother's funeral is quite normal, especially as you and she were so bonded. You would expect her to visit you before anyone else. I've had many visitations from loved ones who have died and it isn't scary at all. They usually come through electrical appliances and radios coming on for instance is very common. The animals you heard could've been your mother's spirit guides. Of course you might've been dreaming which would explain your husband not hearing the sounds. But if it was your mother's spirit, maybe it was only intended for you.

My mom had a similar experience while acting as a live in nurse for a dear family friend...when this lady passed away, my mom said she was awakened from a sound sleep by the sound of heavy tapping inside the wall of the bedroom she was in....she was a little frightened at first, then realized that it meant her friend has passed away..she called the police to report the death (why she did this I have no idea!!) and they told her that many times they've heard this type of thing..My mom felt it was her friend telling her she had departed...
