The Haymarket riot or tragedy is related the movement of the workers for an 8 hour work day that started in 1886. The American labor unions were supporting the 8 hour work day and the movement was centered in Chicago. The workers started a strike and the met near the McCormick harvesting Machine where they were attacked by the Pinkerton Guards. They decided to convene a meeting in the Chicago Haymarket to protest against this attack by the police on the union members. The police ordered the congregation to disperse but at that time an unidentified person threw some explosives at the police who responded by firing at the crowd. The Haymarket affair was basically a foreseen turn in the workers struggle towards fair working conditions and badly affected this movement. There are many who say that the riot was created by outside factors that were affected adversely because of the worker’s strike.
