Were The Navy Service Personnel Captured By Iran Right Or Wrong To Sell Their Stories To The Papers?

Answer Question

I find it all a bit tasteless, but not because they sold their stories, but that it has been blown up to be more important than their capture!  They went through this terrible experience, why on earth should they not benefit from it in any way that they want to.  If that means making a few quid by talking to a tabloid rag or speaking to a respectable television show, then what's the problem, they deserve something for the stress and the impact of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) that will occur to them when the heat of the situation leaves.

I can see the problem some people have had with this, but calling for resignations is blowing it all out of proportion. People wanted to know what happened and why shouldn't we hear it from the mouths of those who it happened to.

Politics has entered into this rather unscrupulously as always.

I didn't agree with the decision to let the media loose on the released naval personnel. I think in view of the fact that at roughly the same time other service personnel were killed in Iraq it was a thoughtless thing to do.
i don't think that the personnel themselves were to blame because they'd had a rough time in Iran and it was far too soon after their release to do this.
Serving in the armed forces always carries an element of risk and when they join up they know this.
It would get completely out of hand if anyone and everyone who underwent an experience in the line of duty appeared on TV and sold stories.
I didn't find the way they dealt with the press coverage and their appearance on Iranain TV very encouraging for the training of the British armed forces. They had obviously very little training in how to deal with their situation.
I was surprised that so much was made of the fact that one person was a woman with a child. I believe all personnel should be treated equally - male and female.
I agree that it was all a bit tasteless.
It has all turned into a farce on a political level.
I don't think we can blame the service personnel for cashing in but they shouldn't have been put in a position were this could happen in the first place.
