Made popular by the 2004 film "Napoleon Dynamite", the liger is far from a fictional animal.  Very real, the liger is a cross between the male lion and the female tiger.  Also referred to as lion-tiger mules, the liger is believed to have been around since the 1800's.  Similar in characteristics to both the lion and the tiger, the liger grows to be a much larger animal.  Male ligers have been recorded to reach a weight of five hundred and fifty kilograms (one thousand two hundred pounds) whilst female ligers have been recorded to weigh as much as three hundred and twenty kilograms (seven hundred pounds) and reach a length of ten feet.  These amazing hybrids have been known to live for eighteen to twenty-four years.  A mix between a male lion and a female tiger, the liger must not be confused with a tigon, which is a cross between a male tiger and a female lion.
