Helen Keller, 1880-1968 was a deaf and blind woman who raised awareness of this condition and about whom a film was made in 1962, following a Broadway successful play which was based on her book 'The Miracle Worker'.
Helen was deaf, blind and had no speech following an illness she expereinced at 19 months. It may have been meningitis, but was simply described at that time as being 'Brain Fever'.
Helen then met Anne Sullivan (the Miracle Worker) who taught her how to communicate using the deaf blind alphabet, which is spelled out on the hand. Anne also taught Hellen how to use speech to communicate, despite her deafness.
The two travelled internationally raising awareness of people who were deaf and blind. However, it is for the film of her life that Helen Keller will be best rememberd. Both stars playing her and Anne Sullivan were Oscar winners for their performance.
