Patna is located in the state of Bihar. Bihar is a state in eastern India. The city is one of the few cities in the world that has been continuously inhabited since the ancient times. The former names of Patna were Pataliputra or Palibothra (as Megasthenes called the city in his book entitled Indica). The modern city of Patna lies on the southern bank of India's largest river, the River Ganges (or the River Ganga, as it is locally known). The city of Patna has a total population of about 1, 200, 000 inhabitants. It covers a total surface area of about 3, 202 square kilometres.

Patna is located in the midst of several important centres of pilgrimage, especially those of the followers of the Jain and Buddhist faiths, including Vaishali, Rajgir, Nalanda (also an ancient and well-known university of India), Bodh Gaya and Pawapuri. It is also a sacred city of the Sikh community as their last guru, Guru Gobind Singh (the tenth and last human guru of the Sikhs), was born in the city.
