    South Dakota refers to a state in the north central part of the United States.  The place is located on the high plains of the northern Middle West.  The name "South Dakota" comes after the Native American tribe Lakota.  The region was given the status of a state on November 2nd 1889.  In other words, it became the 40th state in the United States of America in that year.

    South Dakota is surrounded on the north by North Dakota, to the east by Minnesota and Iowa, to the west by Montana and Wyoming and to the south by Nebraska.  The census reports of 2000 have recorded the population as 754,844.  It is estimated that the total population is present times is more than 775,000.

    The capital of South Dakota is Pierre.  The other noteworthy cities in South Dakota are Aberdeen, Madison, Yanktown and Sioux Falls (the largest city). There are 66 counties in all in the region of South Dakota.
