Why Would Someone Damage A Work Of Art As A Means Of Protest?

PARIS, Oct. 7 — Intruders broke into the Musée d’Orsay early Sunday and damaged a work by the Impressionist painter Claude Monet, the latest in a series of acts of vandalism at cultural sites in France. I find it impossible to understand that kind of vandalism. The news story went on to say the vandalism was thought to be a protest against a specific recent government decision. Can someone explain what the person had to be thinking to do such a thing? Hell, I can't even understand how one can believe killing someone will help their argument.

I suppose it stems to the fact that the value of a painting is worth more financially than anyones life . Most people do not have the appreciation of art that you do ,and feel angry that the value of some paintings bought by rich individuals is a snub to people who cant have operations because of unlimited funding, and who are on the lowest rungs of society. Its a fact that governments wont listen too much to the cries of ordinary people, but damage property that is very valuable or even irreplaceable, and it will cause an uproar.

Padraig, I gave your answer slightly less than the top score, not because I disagree or think your comment was in error, but because it hurts to have to know you are right. I do like and appreciate art and at the same time believe there has to be a better way to make sure everyone has everything they need to live good lives. I guess I'm just sad that what you say is true.

I totally agree with padraig and want to add that not everyone in the world has a high IQ, or even an average IQ and therefore cannot value the artwork.  I think padraig hit it right on by saying that damaging a valuable, irreplaceable item will cause an uproar.
