How Do I Change The Oil In My Car?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Run the car engine until the oil is warm. Taking all precautions, jack up the car to get to the sump  Locate the sump plug which is a large square nut at the bottom. Have a pan ready to catch the old oil. You can improvise by cutting the side out of an old 1 gallon oil can, or use an plastic washing-up bowl. Loosen the nut until it is finger tight. Then carefully unscrew the rest of the way by hand. Be aware, the oil is going to gush out, so make sure you have the pan correctly positioned, and a firm hold on the plug. Once the oil is flowing, lower the jack so every last drop drains. It is best to leave it to for an hour.
Meanwhile replace the old oil filter. This looks like a soft drinks can screwed into the engine block. If it is tight, improvise a strap wrench by wrapping some cord or material around the filter. Use a spanner or something else firm to twist the material tight until it grips and can give extra leverage. Be aware that the oil filter will be full of old oil when it is removed. Coat the thread on the new filter with grease or oil before fitting. Finally refit the sump plug and fill with the correct grade of oil to the mark on the dipstick.
