How We Can Compare The Character Of Moby Dick With Shakespearean Heroes?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The world of English literature classics is vast and there are some works that survive time and boundary, adding to the richness of the language and characters. Some characters remain embedded in the minds of readers like that of Moby Dick. Moby Dick is the central character of the novel of the same title, by Herman Melville. The book first hit the shelves in 1851 and there have been many editions added and available since then.

The story is a melodrama, set around a voyage to hunt and capture Moby Dick, the whale. The hunt is headed by Captain Ahab and his select crew. The adventures of Captain Ahab and the behavior exhibited by Moby Dick and the others are very Shakespearean. There is a lot of similarity in the formal backdrop spelt out, the extended soliloquies and the asides. The eccentricity in the behavior of the whale and the reactions drawn form the captain resemble Shakespearean characters like those highlighted in Othello, The taming of the shrew and Hamlet.

The details of the ship and the individual characteristics of the personalities depicted, if showcased on stage or on the celluloid screen, display a lot of similarity to Shakespearean heroes.
