He was the fifth President of Iraq with Chairman of the Iraqi Revolutionary Command Council on or after 1979. As vice leader under the ailing General Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, Saddam securely controlled conflict surrounded by the government and the prepared forces—at a time when many other groups were painstaking capable of overthrowing the control—by creating repressive security forces.

In the early 1970s, Saddam spearhead Iraq's nationalization of the Western-owned Iraq fuel Company, which had long held a control on the country's oil. Through the 1970s, Saddam paved his authority over the apparatuses of administration as Iraq's economy grew at a fast pace. During and after these conflicts, Saddam used large-scale repression to crush rebellions he deemed intimidating to the stability of Iraq, particularly Shi'a and Kurdish actions seeking to overthrow the administration or gain sovereignty, in that order.

Deposed by the attack, Saddam was captured by US forces on top of December 13, 2003 and was brought to test beneath the newly-created Supreme Iraqi Criminal Tribunal. On November 5, 2006, he was convicted of charges connected to the implementation of 148 Iraqi Shi'ites as a communal sentence for a murder attempt next to him in the town of Dujail, and was sentenced to bereavement by execution. His execution was accepted out on December 30, 2006.
