What Information Can I Find From Irish Census Returns 1821-1841?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The census of 1821 was arranged by barony, civil parish and townland. It took place on where damaged during the Irish Civil war in 1922. Incomplete parts survive for counties Cavan, Fermanagh, Galway, Meath and Offaly ( the old King's County). The records are kept in the National Archives in Dublin.

information recorded in 1821 was as follows:
Name, age, relationship to the head of household, occupation, umber of storeys of a house and the acreage of any landholdings.

1831- very little of this census survives, apart from some information relating to County Derry. The religion of respondants was added at this date.

1841 - Only the original returns for Killeshandra in County Cavan survived after 1922, although there are transcripts available for a number of other areas. In addition to the information noted in 1821/31 further informtion was collected regarding dates of any  marriages, absent family members, literacy and family members who had died since 1831.
