Wargrave gets it's name from the Saxon Weir Grove or an acre of Woodland. It once once part of the old Windsor, great forest.
The wier would have been somewhere in the area over the river Thames.
Local legend has it that the name comes from a raid by Vikings which killed many people, hence the name Wargrave but this has no basis in history or archaeology. No mass garves have been found.
It is reputed that Emma, wife of Canute once had a palace there, again there is no firm evidence for this. The site would have been a wooden construction and it's unlikely that any evidence for it wouls survive, if in fact, it ever existed.
Quuen Elizabeth I confiscated the manor from the Bishop of Winchesyet after one of his sermons annoyed her, she gave it instead to Henry Neville who's descendants kept it until the nineteenth century.
