What Is Sickle Cell Disease?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic disorder, which is characterized by abnormally shaped red blood cells, resulting in pain, infections, chronic anaemia and damage to various organs. The sickle cell disease can be of different types, which depends on the random genetic combination of inherited genes. For example, if an individual suffering from sickle cell disease inherits sickle cell disease affected gene from each parent, that individual will develop sickle cell anaemia. On the other hand, if an individual with sickle cell disease inherits sickle cell disease gene from one parent and any abnormal kind of gene from the other parent, he or she may develop some other kinds of sickle cell disease such as haemoglobin sickle cell disease or haemoglobin sickle cell thalassemia. And if an individual inherits sickle cell gene from one parent associated with a normal gene from the other parent that individual will possess the sickle cell traits but he or she will not be affected by the disease. It implies that the individual will be able to carry the gene to the next generation.
