Do you mean 9 years old in people years, or dog years? Unfortunately, my mother went through this with 2 of her dogs just recently, and they didn't last very long after the diagnosis. That doesn't mean the same will happen in your case, but it probably will. Just remember that we all die someday, but suffering can be worse than death itself. My mother's dogs suffered a lot before they passed, but her love for them blinded her to the fact. Many people will tell you to let the natural course run, but I personally disagree with that. Ask yourself, "What would I want done for me?".

My dog is 16yrs old (human years) he has anal gland cancer. And my view is at the moment he is in no pain but once he is in pain and suffering I am going to have to let him go to the doggy heaven. So my answer is if your dogs eating playful and in no pain let him keep you company, but when he is obviously suffering say goodbye.Jenny
