If I Marry A Canadian Will I Become A Citizen Of Canada?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

No. Canadian citizenship is not given through marriage to an outsider. But marrying a Canadian citizen gives you the right to work and live here which would make it easier when the time comes to apply for a citizenship in the country. There is no such thing as automatic acceptance in Canada or for that matter in most of the countries.

To become a citizen of Canada you will have to get permanent residence and start living in it with all the proper documents. Then you will have to apply for the Canadian membership through proper channels and meet all the requirements as any other person who is seeking naturalization in Canada. This procedure takes around nine to ten months and you will have to stay in Canada for all these months until the end of the process. A child who is born to Canadian parents automatically becomes a Canadian by birth.
