Why Do Scotsmen Wear Kilts?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The tartan kilt a skirt like black and green chequered garment is the traditional and national dress of Scotland; in the past it was a designation which one wore on the basis of which clan one belonged to. Scottish society was in the past characterized by various clans and a distinct dress was needed to distinguish between various clans and accordingly the kilt evolved from a long dress like garment in to various forms with the present evolving sometime in the 18th century; it constitutes a jacket, a shawl, a kilt, a belt, a cap and stockings and shoes.

Another aspect was the comfort and free movement it enabled while traversing through the rugged Scottish terrain. The kilt was portrayed as a national symbol in the middle of the 18th century by the Scots when there were several uprisings in the Scottish highlands that led to the kilt being declared a forbidden garment not to be worn in public.
