Is Dialogue Or Description More Important In A Novel?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Both of these play an important part in a novel. In order to produce a good novel, you need the correct amount of both dialogue and description. Too much dialogue will make readers think that there isn't enough description. Too much description will make the readers think that there isn't enough dialogue and that the novel seems tedious. So in some ways, they both interlink with each other.

You need good, interesting dialogue in your novel that will make your characters seem interesting and make them stand out. If you include too much, then you won't be focusing enough on the characters' surroundings, which won't allow the reader to get a sense of place.

Too much description is boring. Readers don't want to read pages and pages of description where there is very little dialogue, as they will not be getting an idea of how the characters interact with one another and how they feel in certain situations.

Both are equally important, so try to include an equal amount which will keep the reader interested. Lots of dialogue and descriptions will lead to an incredibly bulky novel, which will lead to massive edits from the publisher, leaving you unhappy that massive chunks of your hard work are disappearing!
