Why Does DNA Replication Always Proceed In 5'to 3' Direction

The DNA polymerase always reads along the parental strand in a 3' to 5' direction, therefore the new or "nascent" DNA strand grows in a 5' to 3' direction. The DNA polymerase directs this directional growth by forming hydrogen bonds between the newly added bases and the existing bases on the parental strand as well as by catalyzing the addition of a phosphodiester bond between the 5' phosphate group of a new nucleotide and the 3' hydroxyl that is free on the nascent strand.
