Is Ketamine An Anesthetic?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Ketamine is a drug which is used as an anesthetic as well as a recreational substance; its notable effects are dissociating in nature which results in the individual being unable to grasp any sense perceptions leading to a state of mind characterized by hallucinations and dreams.

The drug which was initially used as an anesthetic in war times has in recent times been phased out on account of its unpredictable effect on different individuals though it continues to be used by veterinarians and in some developing countries.

It was first isolated in 1962 and later became popular due to its pronounced psychedelic effects on the mind of the user which led to its being classified as a Schedule III drug in the United States and a Class C drug in the UK.

Ketamine as compared to other anesthetics does not obstruct respiration to a large extent and is also used as an analgesic and in some cases as a treatment for migraines and addiction related disorders.

It is also used on babies for oral surgery since it doesn't stop respirations and is short term.
