San Michele also at times called the Island of the Dead, is a burial ground island of the Venice region. It is also linked with the Sestiere of Cannaregio from where it is placed on a short distance towards the north east.

Alongside the nearby San Cristoforo della Pace, the island was quiet famous with the resident travellers and fishermen to land.

The first ever Renaissance church in Venice, Mauro Cordussi's Chiesa di San Michele in Isola and a monastery are placed on this island. San Cristoforo was elected to be made a cemetery during 1807, it was conceptualised by Antonio Selva, the reason behind the construction of a new cemetery was, one on the main land was declared unsanitary. The island was also later converted into a prison for some time but till date is closed section of the cemetery.
