HDL stands for high-density lipoprotein. It is better known by many people as the “good cholesterol” that is found in the human body. It is one of the five major lipoproteins that help triglycerides and cholesterol to move through the blood stream. Approximately 30% of all blood cholesterol is HDL.

HDL levels in the body should be high. (LDL is low-density lipoprotein that should be low). High HDL levels help excess cholesterol return to the liver where it can be excreted from the body. HDL also aids in eliminating bad cholesterol that can block arteries and cause severe medical problems. The more HDL is in the body, the healthier the cholesterol levels will be noted.

Medical professionals can check a person’s HDL level through the process of a simple blood test. The test is called a lipid profile and it measures both HDL and LDL in the blood. This important test can help doctor’s determine if a patient is at risk for heart disease or other cholesterol related illnesses. Patients who are at high risk for heart disease such as overweight people, smokers, drinkers, and diabetics are encouraged to get a lipid panel to check the HDL levels in their blood. A good HDL level would not exceed 60 mg/dL and not be less than 40 mg/dL.

There is medication that can be prescribed to help people who have very high or very low HDL levels. However, a simple lifestyle change can be just as beneficial such as diet change, increased exercise and cessation of smoking and drinking.

There are no signs or symptoms of very high HDL or very low HDL. Therefore, it is very important to have the levels checked frequently, especially if you are one of the people who are at high risk for dangerous cholesterol levels and heart disease.

Lipoprotein particle in the blood. HDL is known as "good" cholesterol because it deposits cholesterol in the liver, where it is excreted.
