Blood must pass through the heart - through the left ventricle to be sent to the rest of the body. The left ventricle contracts very strongly and forces blood out into the main body artery, the aorta. From there it is disseminated to smaller arteries and then capillaries to reach every tissue, organ and cell in the body.

The blood must also pass through the right side of the heart because, from there, it travels to the lungs to pick up fresh oxygen. Taking oxygen around the body is one of the main functions of blood and this is how cells around the body can use the energy from food molecules to grow and repair and carry out all their functions.
