Many companies have taken a more cautious scheme, and embed a random number in the handset's firmware that is only reverse by the network on whose behalf the lock was claimed. Such phones can usually still be unlocked, but require to be communicated to special test equipment that will code that part of its firmware where the lock status is kept.
Most phones have safty precautions built in its software that safe users from entering the unlock code lot of times, normally four. After that the phone becomes "hard-locked" and specific unlocking equipment has to be needed in order to unlock it.
Handset manufacturers have costly incentives both to growup simlock safty, but also to fall down it.Also, making it too problematic to unlock a handset makes it less demanding to network service that have a legal obligation to facilitate unlock codes for every handset.
The major reason to unlock a phone is to be capable to use it with a many SIM card. For instance, when travelling abroad it's normally cheaper to ordinary use a foreign network. Contrary to few of beliefs, an unlocked phone can't reach cell phone towers or give free phone service. All it can do is take other SIMs.
