Which Are The Highest Mountains In The World's Seven Continents?

    The highest mountain in the world and Asia is, of course, Mount Everest, which is also known as Sagarmatha and Chomolangma, as stants 8,850 metres high.

    Next highest is Mount Aconcagua in South America which is 6,960 metres high.

    North America is next with Mount McKinley, also known as Denali, which stands 6,194 metres high.

    Fourth highest is in Africa where Mount Kilimanjaro rises to a height of 5,963 metres.

    Europe's highest peak is Mount Elbrus at 5,642 metres while in Australia/Oceania, the highest mountain if Mount Puncak Jaya which stands 5,030 metres high.

    In Antarctica the tallest peak is Mount Vinson Massif at 4,897 metres high.

    While Mount Everest, which sits on the border of Nepal and China, is recognised as the highest mountain on Earth it is not strictly speaking the tallest. For the Hawaiian volcano, Mauna Kea has the greatest relief at 10,200 metres measured from the sea bed. From sea level only 4,203 metres are visible.
