It is popular to make pathways with cement bricks that are available in many shapes and sizes. One such cement brick is in the shape of a regular pentagon. Each side of the pentagon is 70 cm. The apothem of the base is 48.2 cm and the depth of the brick is 10 cm. Determine the surface area and the volume of this brick.

Since you know the apothem A, (the perpendicular distance from center to a side) and the length of a side:
Determine the perimeter P, by multiplying the side length by N (where N = the number of sides).
The area is given by: Area =  (A x P) divided by 2.  (Or as stated above by Nidar,  .5(A x P)

Multiply the area by the depth, 10, to get the volume, 84350 cubic centimeters.

Surface Area of pentagon = 0.5 x apothem x no. Of sides x side length
      = 0.5 x 48.2 x 5 x 70
      = 191.87

volume = depth x surface area
      = 191.87 x 10
      = 1918.7
