Ivan I (1288-1340) also known as Ivan the Moneybag was the Prince of Moscow and later the Grand Prince of Vladimir the highest title of a Russian monarch at that time. He rose to prominence as the chief tax collector of the Mongol Golden Horde khan Muhammad Ozbeg.

He was aided in his enterprise by the defection of the principality of Tver, then an influential power in Russian politics to the Kingdom of Lithuania which forced the khan to seek Ivan as a vassal for administrative purpose. Ivan's loyalty to the khan of the Golden Horde resulted in the principality of Moscow becoming rich and powerful and established as one of the important cities in Russia along with Novgorod.

Ivan also procured from the khan the right to name his son as his successor as the Grand Prince of Vladimir which resulted in Moscow being regarded as the capital of Russia in later times. Also loans given by Ivan to neighboring principalities led to them falling in debt and consequently being annexed by later rulers of Moscow.
