    Walter Hallstein of the Federal Republic of Germany was the first president of the European Commission. Hallstein took office in 1958 and remained in power until 1967.

    The first president of the Council of the European Union was Victor Larock of Belgium. Larock was in power for six months, from January to June 1958. He was followed by Siegfried Balke of Germany and then by Maurice Couve de Murville of France.
