The Isle of Mann is usually described as having a distinct geographical- north and south division pre-dating the present parish boundaries . The older divisin was in place prior to 1796.

On the North Side the Parishes are: Andreas, Ballaugh,Bride,German, Jurby, Lezayre, Michael and Patrick.

On the South side of the island the Parishes are;: Arbory, Bradden, Lonan, Malew, Marown, Maughold, Onchan, Rushen and Santan.

Some Manx suranmes are found in placenames. An example of this is Ballamaddrell which means the farm belonging to Maddrell. this is found in the parish of Arbory on the south of the island.

Village and town names include Ballaugh, Castletown, Colby, Crosby, Douglas ( capital administrative and commercial of the island), Laxy, Michael Village, Peel, Port Erin, Port St. Mary ,Ramsey and Sulby.

Laxy was once the focus of mining on the island and the Laxy Wheel is a famous landmark in the area.
