Legally Can You Get Your Pets Medical Records?
I took my cat to a nearby vet. About a month ago and they performed many procedures on him at different times. I feel as if his best interest isn't in mind just money for their pockets. He has not gotten any better and I want to take him to a different vet. For a second opinion. To save time, tests and money I want to bring his medical records to his new vet. Do they have to give them to me if I ask for them?
Answers
Not necessarily. I requested my pet's (diseased) records, and the vets refused. I requested AVMA to point me to the right direction on how to obtain them. They indicated that some states do not have applicable laws, and they asked me to request Alabama State Board of Medical Examiners' help and guidance. They (board) contacted the board's legal counsel. The legal counsel replied that I had to request the vets in writing for the release of the records. I requested the vets in writing and they sent me copies of partial records. . .It took me 4 months to get copies of records, and I still don't have a complete set of records.

Hi there! Yes of course! You can get your pets' old medical record because it is your right as an owner. It is much better is your new vet will going to request for it. Maybe a written request will do.
Cheers!

Absolutely, they must give you your pets medical records upon request. Don't be afraid to ask because these records belong to you. Good luck and God bless.
