Do Any Famous People Live In Midhurst?

H.G. Wells ( author of  'The War of the Worlds' and 'The Time Machine')  is Midhurst Grammar School's most famous alumni. Midhurst Grammar school is Midhurst's main school, and was founded in 1672. H. G. Wells worked as an assistant teacher at the school, until he won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science.

Other famous people who have been sighted in Midhurst include Prince Charles and other members of the Royal Family. They are seen at the 'Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup', which is a major polo competition with the final held outside the ruins on the estate of Lord Cowdray. This same area was used as a venue for a charity concert which featured English rock band Pink Floyd in 1993.

In 1605, Cowdray House owner, Anthony-Maria Browne was briefly arrested in connection with the Gunpowder Plot. He was briefly employed by Guy Fawkes as a footman, which led to him being suspected as a plotter. He stayed clear of parliament on 5th of November following a warning from Robert Catesby. Anthony-Maria Browne is buried in Midhurst Church.
