Like all of the ancient Egyptian sites, the temple of Luxor is a stunning example of the workmanship and technical expertise of the builders and scribes of the time. The temple at Luxor is sacred site but today is visited by hundreds of thousands of people.

At its entrance is a huge obelisk, made of pink granite. Standing at 25 metres, this towers over you as you walk into the temple. Originally, this obelisk was one of a pair but the other was removed in the early 19th century and erected in Paris at the Place de la Concorde, where it still stands today.

The temple was buried under mud and silt for many years before being discovered by the archaeologist Gaston Maspero in 1881. He excavated the temple, once the local village standing on top of it had been removed. Only one building of the modern village was allowed to remain ~ the Abu al-Haggag Mosque, built by Arabs in the 13th century.

This is now high above the temple. The original doorway has been blocked off, as this is now a sheer from of 30 feet into the ancient temple. A new entrance has been built at street level on the other side and the mosque is still in use.
